  1. The Inhabitants of Lung-su
  2. Attributed to Tung Yuan 
  3. (active ca. A.D. 930)

  8.      Tung Yuan or Shu-ta 
  9. (his style name) was from 
  10. Nanking, Kiangsu province.  
  11. He served the Southern 
  12. T'ang court as Assistant 
  13. Commissioner    of    the 
  14. Northern Park.  According
  15. to tradition, Tung Yuan 
  16. painted landscapes in two
  17. styles; one following the
  18. monochrome ink executed 
  19. in  a  bold  manner  with
  20. coarse brush strokes, and
  21. the  other following  the 
  22. T'ang  "green  and  blue"
  23. colored landscape tradition
  24. in  which  the  drawing  is
  25. meticulous.
  26.      The painting's present
  27. name   is   based   on   a 
  28. colophon   by  Tung  Ch'i-
  29. ch'ang   (A.D. 1555-1636).
  30. But the Ch'ien-lung emperor
  31. (A.D. 1736-1796) explains in
  32. his   inscription   on   the  
  33. painting that this landscape
  34. represents    a    summer 
  35. festival  where  music  is 
  36. played  while  there  is  a 
  37. tug-of-war on the boat for
  38. the evocation of rain.  The
  39. human   figures   on   both
  40. shores  are tiny against  the
  41. majestic  verdant  hill  on 
  42. the right side. The landscape
  43. is seen from above, offering
  44. a panoramic  view  of  distant 
  45. hills and lakes.
